Review the requirements for Michigan’s Segment 1 Driver’s Education. The course follows the State of Michigan-approved AAA curriculum, covering road rules, defensive driving, and safe driving habits. Students must complete both classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction, pass the written test, and receive a Segment 1 Certificate of Completion.

In order to enroll in Segment 1, the driving student must be a minimum of 14 years and 8 months old and have parent permission. Please upload a copy of the child’s birth certificate at registration.

The Segment 1 course spans four weeks and includes:

  • 24 hours of classroom instruction
  • 6 hours of behind-the-wheel (BTW) driving instruction (minimum)
  • 4 hours of behind-the-wheel observation (minimum)

Note: The Segment 1 Certificate of Completion is not a permit to drive. It must be taken to the Secretary of State to obtain the Level 1 Learner’s License.

What is Behind the Wheel (BTW) Instruction?

Behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction will be conducted in a fully insured, dual-controlled vehicle and will begin once the student has completed a minimum of four hours of classroom instruction. BTW instruction must be completed within three weeks of finishing the classroom portion.

To obtain your Michigan Learner’s Permit, you must first complete Segment 1 Driver’s Education, which follows the State of Michigan-approved AAA curriculum. This includes both classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction, along with passing the written state test. After successfully completing these steps, you will receive a green Segment 1 Certificate of Completion.

Please note: The Segment 1 Certificate of Completion is not a permit to drive. You must take it to the Secretary of State office to apply for your Level 1 Learner’s License.
